Lib Dems deliver on Camden Town police pledge12.10.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 23rd Oct 2007
Extra police started working in Camden Town this week after Camden's Lib Dem-led Council invested an extra £300,000 in local policing to drive down crime and drug-dealing. The iconic shopping and market area now has 10 extra police officers and 18 additional police community support officers who started work this week. "They are there to patrol solely around Camden Town's drug and crime hotspots," said Ben Rawlings, the Lib Dems' community safety chief. "We're sure their presence will really make the area safer." "Our Safer Neighbourhoods police team has moved into the heart of Camden Town, and the Lib Dems have invested £300,000 in a greater police presence in Camden Town," added Lib Dem leader of the Council Keith Moffitt. Operations against drug dealers are now carried out every day in Camden Town - resulting in hundreds of charges since the Lib Dem-led administration took control of Camden Council last year. "This April alone 150 bags of cannabis were seized from drug dealers," said Libby Campbell, Lib Dem councillor for Camden Town with Primrose Hill ward.
