Matt Sanders wins Haverstock by-election for Lib Dems

Liberal Democrat Matt Sanders won the Haverstock by-election on Thursday, gaining the seat formerly held by retiring veteran Labour Councillor Roy Shaw. He joins Jill Fraser, who has represented the ward for the Lib Dems since her victory in a by-election in February 2003.

This is the second seat the Lib Dems have won from Labour in Camden since becoming the largest party in the May 2006 full council elections. Lib Dems now hold 22 seats on Camden Council, compared to 16 Labour, 14 Conservative and 2 Green.

The result in full:

Matt Sanders (Lib Dem) 1160 (43.4%)

Labour 1000 (37.4%)

Green 299 (11.2%)

Conservative 213 (8.0%)

Turnout: 34.14%
