Camden Liberal Democrats have selected local campaigner Matt Sanders as their candidate for the Haverstock by-election.

Matt is 24 and lives in St. Leonard's Square off Malden Road, right in the heart of the ward. He has been working with Councillor Jill Fraser on local people's problems, and is already known to residents through the Liberal Democrats' campaign to cut crime.

Matt has pledged to make the fight against crime and anti-social behaviour his top priority. He will also make the case for better housing, more youth services and fairer taxes which relieve the burden on pensioners and low income families.

The by-election will be a straight fight between local Liberal Democrats and Labour, and an opportunity for Camden voters to have their say on ten years of Blair and Brown. The Conservatives can't win in Haverstock.

Local Liberal Democrat campaigner Matt Sanders said:

"I'm delighted to be standing in this by-election for the Liberal Democrats. It would be a real privilege to represent the ward in which I live.

"Camden is a great place to live, but there are also a lot of problems in our area. I have spent the last few weeks talking to my neighbours and I share their priorities for clamping down on crime, better housing and fairer taxes.

"People have a right to feel safe in their own streets. It is totally unacceptable that some people in our community are living in fear. Having been the victim of crime, I understand how important it is to stand up to the gangs that hang out on Malden Road."

"Haverstock already has a popular hard working local Councillor in Jill Fraser. A team of two could work twice as hard for action on the issues that really matter."

Liberal Democrat Councillor Jill Fraser said:

"Matt is an excellent hard-working candidate with a strong desire to serve his local community.

"Because he lives in the heart of the ward, Matt understands the issues that people in this area care about. We have already been working together on local people's problems, and I have no doubt that Matt will make an excellent councillor.

"This by-election will be a straight fight between the local Liberal Democrats and Labour. If people want to see strong action on crime, improvements to council housing and fair taxes they should back the Liberal Democrats."
