Sale of Kentish Town Baths looms

5.10.45pm GMT Tue 7th Feb 2006

It has emerged that leading property firm Sydney and London Properties who are leading on the Euston Station redevelopment have issued a planning specification which proposes building a pool at Euston because 'Kentish Town Batrhs is going to close'. It is evident from the documents that Sydney and London Properties have consulted with councillors from the Labour Group.

Ed Fordham, who stood for the Lib Dems at the last General Election in Hampstead and Highgate, said "The Labour Party are pushing people's patience too far. First we have the threats of closure, then we have promises of consultation that don't happen and now we have councillors speaking with property developers confirming their intention to close the baths.

"Residents will be angry and shocked to learn that the message is being sent out from the Town Hall that the baths are to close. This is not what people have been led to believe but it is what we have feared all along. Clearly Sydney and London properties are serious players in the property market and they don't make assertions lightly or without basis of fact.

"This news will further erode trust in this Labour Council. Increasingly the only option to save Kentish Town Baths will be to kick Labour out of Camden Town Hall in the May elections."
