Jill and Ed celebrate great election results

Reacting to the result Ed Fordham said: "This is a superb result for the Liberal Democrats here in Hampstead and Highgate and I am very proud. Hampstead and Highgate is a superb seat to fight and has a high standard of debate and interest. I congratulate Glenda on her victory - it is a victory for principle and independence of spirit.

"We have gained more seats and move votes and here in this seat we have gained 3,000 more votes than in the previous election. This result isa credit to Margaret Little, Flick Rea and Keith Moffitt who have worked for years to establish the Liberal Democrats - tonight we have converted those local votes into national votes and made further inroads across the whole constituency.

"I am proud of the campaign we have run - on the environment, on pensions, on the quality of life - I will continue to fight and work on local issues.

"The Conservative hopes in Hampstead and Highgate have stumbled and it is the Liberal Democrats who are the winners."
